I’m starting a new series of posts here and would love your feedback.
I’ve been writing songs for 35 years. (Yikes!) My first song was called ‘Greta Garbo/Like a table’ I wrote it in Madison, Wisconsin as a young romantic looking for love. For the young and uninitiated, Garbo was the premier sex symbol of her day (silent movies). Roughly equivalent to a young romantic pining for Marilyn Monroe, though it loses a lot in translation.
Following is the complete lyric. For an mp3 file of this song, you need to contact me in some way. (You’ll figure out how to do if you really want to hear it.) My friend Jerome, a fabulous unknown songwriter, once told me it was the best song I ever wrote. (Not very encouraging Jer.)
- Greta Garbo/Like a table
Where are you Greta Garbo?
tonight when I cry and call your name…
Would you steal into my room on breathless tiptoe?
Take the bellows and fan my dyin’ flame.
Like a table
If only I was able
to just stand on my feet
Like a candle
if only I could handle
this dark night…
Where are you Greta Garbo?
tonight when I cry and call your name
Would you steal into my room on breathless tiptoe…?
Oh sweet Garbo I’d never be the same.
