Where have all the flowers gone?

In this series of blog posts I am postulating that songwriters serve as prophetic voices to tribes, governments, popular culture and to Christendom. Whether or not they are God’s prophets is where the conversation begins….

Most of the posts will be featuring my own songs (not to be too self-serving, but it is my blog) but from time to time I will serve up some of my favorite possible ‘prophecies’ from other songwriters and singers. I ran across this one from Tom Brokaw’s book about the 1960’s–”Boom!”

“…In the fall of 1969, during the trial of the Chicago Seven for inciting violence and riots during the Democratic convention the year before, defendant Abbie Hoffman asked Judy Collins to be a character witness. She took the stand and, instead of testifying, she began singing her hit antiwar song “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” Judge Julius Hoffman ordered her to stop. When she didn’t, a court marshal put his hand over her mouth. She only remembers the judge saying, “We do not sing in court…”
